I Heart Shoes: TERRA PLANA

by terra plana @ Boho Magazine

Why it’s eco-friendly:

The Maple ankle boot is made from recycled quilts. Terra Plana has been using the Saami quilts in their footwear production since autumn 2005. The Saami are seminomadic people, living in the desert of Sindh, Pakistan. They make their quilts from vibrant & unique cotton scraps and patches, which gives them a unique distinction. The Saami believe that the colors and patterns are what gives the quilt life. Terra Plana also uses recycled rubber soles as well as organic hemp canvas & vegetable tanned leathers in all products. $250.

About Terra Plana…

Inspired by ecological survival, TERRA PLANA believes in a variety of non-generic products supporting ideas of sustainability: lightness, anatomic design, disassembly and durability.
We at TERRA PLANA regularly re-evaluate what we can do to minimize waste and toxin use and maximize product use and love.

TERRA PLANA tries hard to use a variety of eco-friendly materials and innovative minimal glue constructions. Shoes that are good for you, shoes made from recycled materials, the minimum shoe. The totally sustainable shoe is still a long way off but with each collection we get that little bit closer.

TERRA PLANA are bold and inquisitive pioneers in sustainable shoe concepts. TERRA PLANA means ‘Flat Land’ and is also the name given to the architecture of the Masias in Northern Spain (homesteads made in clusters of buildings) celebrating a harmony of inside and outside living.

21st CENTURY ARTISANThink on your feet Shoes that respect traditional shoe making – using stitched constructions to minimize glues, and modern techonology to create greater levels of lightness, flexibility and durability.

Payless Going Green

Summer Rayne Oakes, Discovery Network’s Planet Green fashion and beauty expert, has taken on the task of helping Payless ShoeSource launch a “green” shoe line, yet to be named.

The Topeka, Kan.-based company, owned by Collective Brands, and home of the irritating BoGo campaign, says the new brand is part of its “mission and strategy to democratize fashion, design and new ideas in footwear and accessories,” and that the “green” shoes will be available at less than $30 a pair early next year, in about 1,000 stores, as well as on Payless.com. Products will use organic cottons and linen, natural hemp and recycled outsoles, as well as the use of eco-smart packaging.

Like Wal-Mart, Payless stands to gain market share in times of economic downturn…while providing a growing cheap-shoe-buying marketplace with affordable options. Let’s wait and see what these shoes look like, and how sustainable they truly are, before getting too excited. Thoughts?

Jennie Garth Designs Reusable Bag

Actress Jennie Garth of 90210 fame has teamed up with Green Works natural cleaners to design and promote a new environmentally-friendly 100% recycled cotton bag. The designer bag is available for sale online for $10. For every bag sold, Green Works will donate $3.65 to the Sierra Club. The remaining amount of $6.35 covers the cost of the bag.

“Like many moms, I’m on a journey to living a more natural lifestyle without sacrificing quality and convenience,” said Garth. “Working with the Green Works team to design this bag is another opportunity to share the message about natural cleaning, while supporting a deserving organization like the Sierra Club.”
