I Heart Shoes: TERRA PLANA

by terra plana @ Boho Magazine

Why it’s eco-friendly:

The Maple ankle boot is made from recycled quilts. Terra Plana has been using the Saami quilts in their footwear production since autumn 2005. The Saami are seminomadic people, living in the desert of Sindh, Pakistan. They make their quilts from vibrant & unique cotton scraps and patches, which gives them a unique distinction. The Saami believe that the colors and patterns are what gives the quilt life. Terra Plana also uses recycled rubber soles as well as organic hemp canvas & vegetable tanned leathers in all products. $250.

About Terra Plana…

Inspired by ecological survival, TERRA PLANA believes in a variety of non-generic products supporting ideas of sustainability: lightness, anatomic design, disassembly and durability.
We at TERRA PLANA regularly re-evaluate what we can do to minimize waste and toxin use and maximize product use and love.

TERRA PLANA tries hard to use a variety of eco-friendly materials and innovative minimal glue constructions. Shoes that are good for you, shoes made from recycled materials, the minimum shoe. The totally sustainable shoe is still a long way off but with each collection we get that little bit closer.

TERRA PLANA are bold and inquisitive pioneers in sustainable shoe concepts. TERRA PLANA means ‘Flat Land’ and is also the name given to the architecture of the Masias in Northern Spain (homesteads made in clusters of buildings) celebrating a harmony of inside and outside living.

21st CENTURY ARTISANThink on your feet Shoes that respect traditional shoe making – using stitched constructions to minimize glues, and modern techonology to create greater levels of lightness, flexibility and durability.

Designer Spotlight: Ève Gravel

Given this young designer’s uncommon talent and a broad vision, it is hardly surprising to note that Ève Gravel is now considered one of Quebec’s most promising fashion creators. Just 27 years old, she already heads Ève Gravel, the self-named label which for 10 seasons now, has been attracting attention with a decidedly personal style characterized by freshness, daring and flawless cuts.

After working with renowned designers Georges Lévesque, Kevin Alwood (Nevik) and Kathleen Kovats for three years, the graduate of Ottawa’s Richard Robinson Academy of Fashion Design left for Europe to tap into other sources of inspiration. By then, the idea of setting up her own company and making her personal vision of fashion available to the public was already beginning to take shape.

With her well-known determination, just months after her return, Eve Gravel founded her eponymous company, Eve Gravel. And, rather than limiting her approach, season after season, the she has come up with collections designed for strong, uncompromising women, an approach that has attracted an ever-growing clientele.

As a result of the label’s success, the young designer’s innovative collections can now be found throughout Canada, in boutiques and major department stores such as The Bay and Simon’s. Recently discovered by a New York agent, the Eve Gravel label will soon be available to our neighbours to the south.

Eve Gravel says, “The clothes are slightly underground. They’re edgy but accessible. “I design for a woman who wants to make a strong impression.” Eve Gravel’s clothing do the double duty beautifully — career appropriate for day and sexed up for night. And with prices that won’t break the bank fans are rapidly growing. For more information on her newests collection check out her website @ Eve Gravel.

Below are some pictures of her collection.
